There is a chance that I use the term tips in too broad of a manner. When I say tips, especially when I am talking about a guide for a specific country, then I want to cover as much as possible to make your trip better. This includes things to see, what to wear, and any ways that will save you money. These are all of my tips for Puerto Rico solo travel.
Puerto Rico is very dear to my heart. Not only is it a part of my heritage, but it is one of my favorite places to recommend for female solo travelers. Due to it’s financial difficulties, Puerto Rico is one of the most affordable countries to visit. You can find cheap accommodations with more amenities than you can find in other countries. It is a great time to travel to Puerto Rico and take advantage of this amazing culture.
Things to see:
- San Felipe De Morro: San Felipe De Morro is a fortress built in the 1500’s for protection. This is a great place to go if you love history and architecture.
- Old San Juan: You can stop my El Morro which is a world heritage site. A must on your Old San Juan tour should be to be popsicles at Senor Paleta.
- Cueva Ventana (window cave): This is a great place to take beautiful photos. Cueva Venana is located between San Juan and Aguadilla and very easy to find.
- Bioluminescent Bay: This is mostly going to be the bays near Fajardo, Lajas, and Vieques. The bioluminescent bays are created by microscopic organisms. I have heard that these bioluminescent bays cant be seen during the full moon.
- El Yunque National Forest. This is a lush and dense forest and one of the best hikes that the country has to offer.
- The beach, specifically Vieques, undeveloped beach
- Scuba diving:
- Condado: Condado is one of the busiest tourist districts of San Juan. Condado is great for night life and shopping.
- Rain Forest Ziplines:
- Bacardi Factory: I’m not going to lie. For a person that doesn’t really drink alcohol, I really love seeing how it is made.
- Barrier Islands
- Arecibo Observatory
Budget Tips:
- Travel like the locals by taking buses and ferries instead of flying. You can also save money by renting a car and taking the opportunity to road trip the country.
- Pick street food over restaurants. By this I mean, that Puerto Rico is known for all the different vendors that lined the streets in most cities. They often serve the same food that you will find in restaurants but at a cheaper price. If you aren’t going to cook your meals and get your food from the markets then you can save money by utilizing the vendors on the street.
- Try to use rentals over resorts. There are so many options for airbnbs or even hostels down in Puerto Rico. One way that you will be able to save money is to instead rent your lodgings and plan your own activities. As long as you are staying in populated areas that are well lit and have low crime, then you should be fine when it comes to safety.
- Try to save by going in the off and shoulder season. This is always one of my budget tips. Traveling in the off season is always a way to save money. When you travel in the off season then you don’t have to fight the crowds as much, attractions are cheaper, lodging is cheaper, and many restaurants also lower their prices.
- Research free attractions. There are plenty of them that are available.
What to Pack:
There are a few things that you want to make sure that you have for your Puerto Rico solo travel. Make sure that you have a swimsuit. There are so many beaches and want to be ready when the water starts calling to you.
You will want to bring a pair of comfortable sandals. I am certain that you will be doing a lot of walking. Make sure that you always have American dollars. Cash is king in Puerto Rico.
My last tip would be for you to bring a carry-on bag. There will be a bunch of local shops that you want to stop in. It will be great to have a big bag to throw things in.
Extra Tips for Puerto Rico Solo Travel:
- Pork is a big deal in Puerto Rico. For some travelers this isn’t going to be a big deal. For the travelers who don’t eat meat, or don’t specifically eat pork, should make sure that they are paying close attention to the different restaurant items. Make sure you are asking if a dish comes with pork, if it can be made without pork, and if there are alternative meat options.
- Cultural sensitivity is one of my most important tips regarding travel to Puerto Rico. When traveling within the country please remember that the country went through a terrible hurricane in 2017. It’s important to remember that not every part of the island is up and running or prepared for tourist. If you are traveling to Puerto Rico remain courteous to the struggles of others.
Food that you should try:
- Mofongo which is a cake like substance with sauce. Mofongo is served with pork, seafood, and veggies.
- Arroz con Gandulas: a rice dish w/ shredded pork
- Tostones: plaintain chips that are like potato chips
- Mallorca: a sweet pastry roll that is made with powdered sugar
- Helado: these are fruit flavored ice cream cups
I would love to visit! The architecture looks great 🙂
