So, in one of my first blogs I mentioned that one of the reasons that women should travel solo is so that they could build a travel tribe. Some people act like traveling solo is a terminal disease. That once you start you will be destined to travel alone until you die. Personally I don’t see the problem with that but here are 9 black women travel groups to add to your travel tribe!
What is great about travel groups, all of these happen to be free facebook groups to join, is that it is inspirational and inspiring. Some women are afraid to travel alone but seeing other women who are doing it can be just the push that they need to take the first steps in their own journey.
I always tell women that solo travel is possible, solo travel is safe, and solo travel is affordable. Here are a variety of groups that show black women, and frankly women in general, that solo travel is for the black girls too! I hope this post says this even louder for the people in the back.
Black Women Who Travel:
So in full disclosure I am a part of all these groups but “Black Women Who Travel” is one of my favorite. What I find to be important is that this group is large enough to be fairly active. I am always seeing posts from this group popping up.
There is a wonderful group of women who are traveling abroad and domestically (to the US) and are willing to offer information and inspiration to other women. You can also find travel buddies in this group as there are always posts for women who are solo who are looking for people that they can travel with.
What I would use this group for: Finding women to travel with and destination ideas. Also, some budget tips when they pop up.
Sisters Traveling Solo
The biggest benefit of this group is that they put trips together. Also, they are bigger than just their facebook group. They have a full blown website where they literally do all the things. This was one of the first groups that I ever joined and I am so glad that I did.
Having a group of black women who are no only doing their own trips but is also promoting trips as a group is a game changer. There are other websites out there that try to create groups for black people and by extension black women but do they offer to purchase passports for people? Sisters traveling solo does.
Not only are they talking the talk but they are walking the walk. They are uplifting women to not only travel the world on their own but they are building a community where black women can grow together. What more could you want.
What I would use this group for: Finding structured trips instead of building my own trip and potentially a passport if I don’t have one.
Black Travel Movement
So this group isn’t just for black women but I do find that a good portion of the people in this group are women so it’s a good place to start. They also have their own website where they promote black travel. They also put together several trips per year where black people can come together and travel around the world.
Now this group can serve a few different purposes. If you are single and ready to mingle and looking for a place to meet other black people who are passionate about travel, then this group can be for you. This groups also has a large following.
You can find them on Instagram as well as facebook. This group is great for finding inspiration and just finding comfort in having black travel come to life. :
What to use this group for: Finding a travel bae/boo, pictures of large groups of traveling black people, destination ideas for places that are good for black people.
Singles Black Travel Group
There isn’t much to say about this group. If you are looking for travel bae then this may be a good place to find them. There is several uploads a day of men and women who are trying to find someone to travel with.
This is a mid size group that have a fairly active base of people who often participate. The downside of this group is that I don’t see too many posts about people actually going somewhere. I am not saying that it doesn’t happen but I will say that it is more rare than the posts telling about the a/s/l of someone. Are people still using a/s/l?
What I would use this group for: The chance of finding travel bae.
World Class Travel Crew: Black Women Traveling
This is a growing travel group and I am really starting to love it. The first thing that I think is super awesome about this group is that they have things in place to prevent travel agents from bombarding you with information that you aren’t looking for. They have a specific thread where travel agents can post their trips and information. It is highly discouraged outside of that.
This group is also starting to put together their own trips where women can come together and travel on the same group. They also promote creating your own trip, posting it, and finding other women that you can meet up with. It’s a smaller but growing traffic group.
What I would use this group for: structured group trips and to find travel buddies.
Black Folks Travel Too:
What I love about “Black Folks Travel Too” is that they seem to have a younger vibe. I see lots of posts about using technology to strengthen your trip. There is also an accompanying blog that can help to strengthen your connection to the group.
This group works really hard to promote people getting out there and traveling the world, even if they are doing it solo. They want people to post videos and photos and share their travel with the group. They also have sponsored trips so that is a bonus.
What I would use this group for: a younger feel, sponsored trips, and destination ideas.
African American Travelers:
There are over 63,000 members in this group and as you can see a good portion of them are women. What I love about this group is that it is incredibly diverse. The group is filled with beautiful black women of all ages, shapes, and backgrounds. In this kind of group you are bound to find someone who shares your travel goals.
I have seen people posting in this group in just about every country. There are posts from Ghana, Spain, Canada, and every place in between. This is really a group where you can see the breadth of gravel available.
What I would use this group for: Travel destination ideas and potential travel buddies.
Female Travel Buddies:
This is one of the most active groups that I am a part of and it is a group with proven results. The downside of travel groups is that you often find it filled with travel agents that are constantly trying to sell you something. Sometimes all you want is to see some pretty pictures and get a few ideas. I know that I personally am not always looking to have something sold to me.
What is great about this group is that I never have to worry about that. Female travel buddies also has a proven track record of setting up several successful trips between members. Women really do find travel buddies in this group and travel all over the world together. Personally speaking, I am planning a trip with one of the women that I met in this group. We are going to Hawaii!
What I would use this group for: Inspiration for travel destinations and finding other women to travel with if I am not ready to travel solo.
The Solo Female Traveler Network:
This is really more of a bonus. This group isn’t specifically for black women but there are over 180,000 members and it is really active. There are always people that are looking for travel buddies or trying to set up trips. It is incredibly motivational and inspiring.
There you have it! 9 different black women travel groups to inspire your next trip! Make sure you give your girl a shout out if you join any of these groups.
