Tips for a Solo Female Arizona Road Trip

I have only taken two road trips through Arizona but it was definitely memorable. I can easily remember driving though the cactus field and running from the sun. It is hard to believe that cactus can get a 8-10 feet tall, if not taller, and can actually be seen in person. The following are a couple of tips that you can use for a solo female Arizona road trip. Let me know how it works for you in the comments below!

Costs and Where to Cut

Arizona as a whole was not a state that I found to be very expensive. I was able to find a reasonably priced hotel room for under $100 and an Airbnb for less than $50. If you are looking for a discount regarding Airbnb you can use my code and get up to $40 off your first booking and $15 towards an Airbnb experience such as yoga, wine tasting, and photography classes.

One of the biggest expenses for any road trip is the cost of gas. The cost of gas is more expensive than Texas (which is one of the cheapest gas states) but noticeably cheaper than the gas that you will face in California. I am paying about $2.60 a gallon right now in Texas. In my Mazda CX-5 (12-13 gallon tank) it is about $31-34 to fill up. I remember paying more than $2.60 a gallon in Arizona but it is definitely over $3.20 in California.

Lodging

There is a lot of ways that I cut costs when it comes to booking the place where I will lay my head. My first choice is to use Trusted House Sitters. This website is absolutely amazing. In exchange for watching cute pets you can get free places to stay. I have used the site for Colorado, Georgia, and Texas. You should also be able to find options for Arizona. There is a fee to join but it’s well worth it when you think about the fact that you can can also find places to stay internationally as well.

There is always the good old Airbnb which I embedded a coupon for. I have used Airbnb all of the world and have always had a pleasant experience. I have also cut costs by using the priceline “name your own price” tool if other coupons are not available.

Safety Concerns

Antelope Canyon

If you are traveling in the heat of the summer there are two big concerns. In southern Arizona, it gets super hot and you don’t want to risk having a popped tire on the hot pavement. Always make sure that you are keeping your car up to date to avoid car issues. The other concern is related to head and being out in nature.

There is a reason why I always pack some sort of weapon when I am traveling solo. I don’t say this to scare anyone, but I always make sure that I can protect myself. I usually have my little bat and maybe a knife in my middle console.

There are a lot of opportunities to hike when you are in Arizona. Where you are in the Northern or the Southern part of the state there are dangers in the wild that you look out for. I am talking about spiders, snakes, dehydration, and the overall risk of getting lost.

If you are planning on getting out for a hike, make sure that you are sticking to organized routes, taking water with you, and looking into safety regarding poison from snakes and spiders.

What You Should Do

Grand Canyon during Sunset
  1. The top choice should be for you to go to the Grand Canyon. Of all the sites to see on an Arizona Road Trip, this should for sure be the highlight.
  2. Papago Park: Specifically you will want to see the hole in the rock.
  3. Coyote Butts: This is a fairly easy hike that you can take. I have heard that there isn’t any water fountains along the way, so make sure that you pack your own.
  4. Antelope Canyon: If you haven’t seen the pictures for this pace, then you aren’t living your best life.
  5. Havusu Falls: If you are looking for a tough hike then this is where you need to be. A good chunk of this bad boy is uphill but some its also some of the best sites you will find on your Arizona road trip.
  6. Phoenix Art Museum: It’s totally free and budget friendly on Wednesdays.
  7. Lost Dutchman State Park: This park is a short drive from Phoenix. You should be able to get there in less than an hour.
  8. The Hoover Dam: This is part Arizona and part Nevada. It’s also a fairly short trip from Vegas.
  9. Day trip to Las Vegas: Now, Las Vegas is not in Arizona but if you are already in Northern Arizona then you are literally right there. If you have never been to Las Vegas or want to go again, this is a great opportunity if you are already on a road trip.
  10. See the ancient ruins in Sedona, Arizona.
