12 Best Cities For Black Women to Travel Alone:

Before we even get started, I want to mention that there are a few cities that I left off of the list. This includes: NYC, Boston, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. This is mostly due to the fact that these cities are well knows as safe spaces for Black Women. With that being said, here is my list for the best cities for Black women to travel alone.

I am really hoping that this blog will urge more women to travel. This means more travel within the country as well as outside of the country. I hope that this post proves both insightful and inspirational.

New Orleans

New Orleans, Louisiana, Usa

There are so many reasons why New Orleans should be on your list of places to go as a Black woman who does solo travel. While there are parts of the city that are dangerous, I have always found the tourist sections to be fairly safe. What I love about the city is that it is walkable. Once you make it down to a Bourbon Street or something similar, it feels like everything is within your grasp.

Not only is there great food and great shopping but it is steeped in black history. I love how strong New Orleans is in Black culture and Black art. As a new art collector and growing foodie, New Orleans is always at the top of the list of cities that I am willing to go.

San Fransisco

Golden Gate Bridge, California, Bridge

I went to San Fransisco during my longest road trip in the summer of 2017. Few people know that San Fransisco has a historically Black district like other major US cities. In addition to the Black history that is in San Fransisco, you can jump across the bay and also enjoy Oakland. What I love about San Fransisco is that you have the traditional tourist spots but there is a lot that you can do off the beaten path.

I loved being down by the water. I did find it difficult to travel up and down the hill but if you have a car this shouldn’t be much of a problem. Make sure that you save your coins for parking though. It has some of the most expensive parking I have had to pay for and the cost of hotels in no joke. I actually stayed on the other side of the bridge in Tiberon.

Denver

Denver, Skyline, Cityscape, Night, Sky

The “mile high city” is one of my favorite cities in the country. While many people are traveling there to take advantage of their lenient stance on weed, there is a lot that you can do while in Denver. It is a very health conscience city and a dream for any woman who enjoys adventure.

While you are in Denver you can pack on the pounds with with amazing food and then work it off when you hit the slopes or take a hike in the mountains. I would describe the city as more drivable than walkable but there is a growing population of minorities and I think it is a city that any Black woman would enjoy.

Houston

City Skyline, Houston, Texas, Downtown

Houston is currently the city that I live in. It is one of the largest cities in the country and also one of the most diverse. There is a very large population of black people. In addition you will find a large Vietnamese and Indian population. I will warn that the traffic is horrible and parking in downtown Houston is expensive and also horrible but don’t let that deter you.

There is so much that happens in Houston at any one time. Not only are there concerts, conferences, sports teams, and festivals but on a daily basis there is great food. The people are mostly kind. The upside really is that Houston is pretty affordable in terms of places that you can stay in.

Austin

Texas, Art, Wall, Street Art, Urban

Austin is top 5 best cities in the country in my opinion. There is so much that you can do. Unlike some of the cities on this list, I think that Austin does one of the best jobs as having the urban parts of a city but also remaining connected to nature.

Austin also does an amazing job at promoting local businesses. This includes food, breweries, clothing, and also art. Every weekend they have thriving farmer’s markets and on a daily basis you can find an outdoor activity to participate in. Make sure that you go to South Congress and 6th street. You won’t be sorry.

Portland

Portland, Ocean, Reefs, England

Portland is a city that I really think you need to have a car in but once you get downtown, the parking is cheap and the city is easy to walk around. Like Austin, Portland does a great job at promoting local art and local business. If you are a fan of craft beer then this is definitely a place that you want to stop. As far as west coast cities go, I thought that Portland was fairly affordable. Stay a bit outside of the city to save extra money.

Seattle

City Skyline, Seattle, Downtown

Seattle is much like Boston when it comes to the way that it is mapped out. The layout of the city makes no sense but that doesn’t take away from the city itself. I would suggest that you head down to Pike Market for some of the best shopping in the city. I would also suggest going to a place called “Biscuit Bitch.” They have delicious, stick to your ribs, biscuits and gravy.

Orlando

Parks, Orlando, Florida, Fun, Garden

Orlando is one of the best cities for Black people economically. There is a diverse and thriving population of Black men and women who call Orlando home. This is a great place for any Black woman to take a vacation. There is also the numerous adventures that you will be able to find at the adventure parks. I have only been there twice but each time it gets better and better.

Charlotte

Charlotte, Sky Scape, City Scape

Charlotte is a city that has a combination of big city and southern charm. I went to college for 6 years about 2 hours from Charlotte. It is a great place for Black culture and specifically Black art. There is an active light life that almost anyone can enjoy. On top of that you can enjoy the several sports teams that call Charlotte home.

Memphis

Beale St, Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis

Memphis is one of two cities on this list that I haven’t been to but it was very popular when I asked other Black women for recommendations for the best cities for Black women to travel alone. What I think people enjoy about this city is that is very affordable and it is also a foodie’s paradise. Memphis barbecue is known around the world and it can’t be missed while you are there. There is also a very vibrant Black culture when it comes to music. Memphis is known to be one of the hubs for jazz music.

Chicago

Chicago, Illinois, City, Urban, Downtown

Chicago is known as one of the best cities for Black women that are looking for love so I would like to think that some of these same benefits apply to Black women who are looking to travel. The benefits of Chicago is that it has all of the perks of a major city but you might be able to take advantage of its midwest values and safe a few bucks. It’s not cheap compared to a place like Cleveland but it’s cheap compared to San Fransisco.

Chicago has every benefit of a major city and has deep roots of Black culture. This is a city that should definitely be on your list.

Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia, City, Landscape

There is so much that you can love about Atlanta. It is basically the official Black capitol of the United States. Atlanta happens to have one of the highest populations of Black people. It is the home of a number of Black universities, and more Black industries than almost any other city in America.
